Dr. Charla Givans, PhD, is an HCPC Registered Drama & Movement Psychotherapist living and working in London.
About
I have over 20 years experience working with adults, families and children in a variety of settings including the NHS, schools and private clinics. My approach is holistic, integrative and rooted in Jungian psychology, which considers the relationship between self, body, mind, soul, and spirit.
I trained with the Sesame Institute at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where, for seven years, I was a Visiting Lecturer and Clinical Placement Supervisor. I have a PhD in Dramatherapy from Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, an MA in Renaissance Drama from Warwick University, and a BA (Hons) in English Literature, Psychology and Theatre from Augusta University, USA.
I bring an exceptional level of sensitivity, openness, and authenticity to the therapeutic relationship and I understand and work with the influence of cultural roots, ‘home’, sense of self, and adapting to different cultures and landscapes. A person’s lived experiences are honoured and form the material of the encounter, which opens the possibility to rediscover and remember the authentic self. The therapy is collaborative and relational which means I am present to what is unfolding and provide an empathetic and safe space for each person to engage in meaningful ways.
Dramatherapy tends toward the root cause of an issue and invites the potential for engagement with the unconscious which can result in a fuller expression and increased feelings of belonging. Working within an art form can increase confidence and self-awareness. It is also an effective complement when words feel inadequate, lost or unavailable for whatever reason. The focus is not on performing, unless that is helpful, but on finding creative ways to explore and work with struggles. No experience of drama is needed.
Professional Play
I offer a six-week small creative movement group for adults. We will move through the elements of earth, water, fire, air. The following two weeks will be a consolidation and integration/performance of the work. This is a chance to connect with oneself and others in a safe and playful manner. This may be much needed as we process what the past years have meant for each of us. Email charla@creativeflow-therapy.com if you are interested.
Contact
Currently I offer individual therapy or yoga sessions (RYT 200 Yoga Alliance). This can either be in person or online to support safety during Covid.
If you are an organisation or company interested in collaborating, feel free to get in touch.
